Danish Christmas seals - Julemærker collection
Danish Christmas seals, known as Julemærker, are charity labels issued annually in Denmark
since the early
20th century. The very first Danish Christmas seal was released in 1904, designed by Einar Holbøll, a Danish
postal clerk who introduced the idea of selling decorative seals to raise funds for children suffering from
tuberculosis. His initiative became a remarkable success and soon inspired similar issues in many other
countries.
This collection presents a wide selection of Danish Christmas seals from various decades, showcasing the
rich artistic tradition and changing design styles of these small but historically meaningful labels. Each
annual issue reflects Danish culture, winter traditions, folklore themes and the artistic trends of its
time. Many designs were created by well-known Danish illustrators and artists, making the seals popular
among collectors of both philately and graphic art.
Danish Julemærker remain highly collectible due to their unique combination of charity purpose, national
heritage and artistic quality. This archive provides an accessible and visually rich reference for anyone
interested in Scandinavian philately, thematic collecting or the history of charity labels.
